9. 13,000-Year-Old Human Remains
Some of the oldest-known human remains in the Americas were discovered in recent years, deep in the underwater cave systems of the Yucatan Peninsula in modern-day Mexico. In 2007, a team of divers found the ancient skeleton of a teenage female, whom they named Naia. Her remains were estimated to be over 12,000 years old.

8. Swedish Atlantis
In 2011, a team of divers discovered a collection of Stone Age artifacts off the Swedish coast, in the Baltic Sea. Included among the relics were a harpoon made from animal bone, flint tools, animal horns, wood, ropes, and the bones of ancient animals called aurochs.

7. An Ancient Forest
In 2015, divers Dawn Watson and Rob Spray of the volunteer group SeaSearch discovered the remains of a 10,000-year-old forest off the coast of Norfolk, England, at the bottom of the North Sea. Pretty cool place for a forest to hide! Watson found the forest just 300 meters (984.2 feet) from shore. At first, she thought she’d encountered the remains of a shipwreck.

6. An Underwater River
The dense, tropical jungle of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is littered with amazing cenotes, which are sinkholes caused by collapsed limestone that exposes the groundwater. One of the region’s sinkholes, the Cenote Angelita, comes with an extra surprise! It contains a distinct underwater river, located about 100 feet (30 meters) below the surface.

5. Shifting Tectonic Plates
British scuba diver, marine biologist, and underwater photographer Alexander Mustard is one of the few people who can say they’ve swum between two continents. How?? He entered a gap between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates near Iceland. The plates are separating at a rate of about one inch (2.54 cm) per year, and Mustard has captured breathtaking images during his dives into the crevice.

4. A Missing WWII-Era Submarine
In 2016, divers off the coast of Sardinia found the remains of the long-lost British World War II submarine HMS P311. The initial discovery was made by Massimo Domenico Bordone, a wreck hunter based in Genoa, Italy. He identified the ruins as the HMS P311 by the vessel’s two Chariot-style manned torpedoes.

3. Underwater “Crop Circles”
Japanese scuba diver and photographer Yoji Ookata has dedicated over half a century to exploring underwater mysteries. During a dive near Amami Oshima, off the southern tip of Japan in 2012, Ookata stumbled upon something he’d never seen before, despite his decades of diving experience.

2. Brinicles
Brine icicles, or brinicles, have several nicknames, including “sea stalactites” and “icicles of .” They might be pretty, but these things are very strange. These beautiful but deadly “tentacles” result from impurities like salt being forced out during the formation of Arctic and Antarctic sea ice. As the stream of salt drains from the ice, the surrounding water becomes more saline, lowering its freezing temperature and increasing its density.

1. 100 New Species
In 2018, scientists announced the discovery of the “rare light zone,” more formally called the Rariphotic Zone. It’s an ocean zone extending from 226 feet (130 meters) to 984 feet (300 meters) deep. The new section was discovered during a research trip to Bermuda led by marine scientists from Oxford University and organized by Nekton, a British non-profit organization for ocean exploration.

10. The Forbidden Mountain
By 1975, the world’s 20 tallest mountains had already been climbed. However, there remains one elusive summit- that of Gangkhar Puensum that lies on the border between Bhutan and China. With an elevation of 24,836 feet, it’s the highest unclimbed mountain in the world, and a place steeped in mystery.

9. Megalithic Stones in the Ural Mountains
The Ural mountains in Russia have been the site of a number of mysterious finds, but perhaps none so strange as a series of megalithic stones that were found in 2014 near Shoria mountain in southern Siberia. Some of these stones are thought to weigh as much as 4,000 tons, and they appear to have been cut with tools to give them flat surfaces and sharp corners… before being stacked 130 feet high.

8. The Ararat Anomaly
Mount Ararat, in the east of modern-day Turkey, is one of the most famous mountains in the world because of its religious significance. A photograph taken in 1949 by a US Air Force reconnaissance plane made this place even more mystical. The mountain is actually a dormant volcano, consisting of two cones known as Greater Ararat and Little Ararat.

7. Black Mountain
Black Mountain, in Queensland, Australia, stands out from the surrounding brush with its ominous looking dark rock, but this place has long been associated with unexplained phenomenon and is feared and avoided by those who live nearby. Whether it’s strange creatures, unexplained lights, or the countless people supposed to have visited but never returned… Black mountain has it all, but is there any truth behind it?

Dyatlov pass, in the northern region of Russia’s Ural mountains, is the site of one of mountaineering’s greatest mysteries. In January of 1959, nine college students were killed under mysterious circumstances, and to this day no-one knows what happened to them. 5. Gurudongmar Lake
Gurudongmar lake, in India, is one of the highest lakes in the world and is considered sacred by Buddhists, Sikhs, and Hindus. Legend says that the place was blessed by Guru Nanak, the spiritual leader of Sikhism, while he passed by in the 15th century.

4. Kangtega Peak
The Kantega peak is a major summit in the Nepal Himalayas that reaches as high as 22,251 feet… and was first climbed in 1964. At first, it looks like every other peak in the range, but there's something that's caught the attention of UFO hunters around the world… the fact that a large portion of the mountain has been blacked out on Google Maps.

3. The Valley of Headless Men
Nahanni national park, in the Mackenzie mountain range of Canada, is as stunning a place as you would expect from the region… but there’s something mysterious about this particular area, which has become known as the valley of headless men. Rather than just being a scary name, it's earned this moniker because of the number of people who have disappeared nearby and later found without their heads.

The Khentii mountains are a range to the northeast of Mongolia, and are covered by the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected area… which is a 4,740 square mile wildlife preservation area that limits visitors, whether for tourism, hunting, or other reasons.

The Himalayas is a massive and largely unexplored mountain region, and legends from India and Tibet suggest there may still be something incredible to discover… the city of Gyanganj, also known as the city of the immortal beings. 10. Mars-Like Structures
With the next big challenge in space exploration being to travel to Mars, scientists are trying to find ways to prepare humans for the environment… but it turns out they don't actually need to look that far to see what it's like because there's a mine in England that's very very similar.

9. Mountains
We're used to seeing the range of topographical mountains on our planet at the surface, but underground?? Recent discoveries have led researchers to believe it's just as varied under the Earth’s surface. A study published in early 2019 explained how geophysicists analyzed seismic waves to infer what lay underground. A particularly strong magnitude 8.2 earthquake in Bolivia in 1994 provided the ideal dataset, and they were stunned to see what they found.

8. A Lake of Molten Carbon
Carbon is crucial to life on this planet, but also an element that’s linked with the increasingly changing environment that’s seen worldwide. As we learn more about the planet, more and more deposits of carbon are being found… such as in the permafrost and within the ocean, and in 2017 researchers discovered one of the biggest sources of all- a massive lake of molten carbon beneath the western United States.

7. Heat Plumes
In 2013, scientists announced the results of a study that used seismic waves to investigate the earth beneath volcanoes, and found something quite unexpected. Described as huge ‘fingers of heat’, with some as much as a few thousand miles long, these structures help to explain hotspot volcanoes that have given birth to islands like Hawaii and Tahiti.

6. Diamonds
Diamonds are a highly sought after stone, and very valuable because of their rarity. A recent discovery has shown that the earth has far more diamonds than anyone had previously thought, but don’t get too excited yet, because they’re currently well beyond our capability for extraction.

5. A New Type of Ice
Diamonds are formed deep within the earth's crust before working their way toward the surface. By studying them, scientists can find out what the conditions are like so deep down, and a recent discovery surprised everyone. They found, trapped within the rigid structures of a diamond, a type of ice that was not previously thought to occur naturally on earth.

4. A Huge Reservoir
As more research is carried out into looking at our planet’s structure, new evidence continually comes forward that forces a re-think as to how the earth was formed in the first place. In 2014, scientists looking at seismic data found an anomaly, at the boundary of the earth’s crust.

3. Molten Iron River
In 2016, researchers studying the magnetic field of the earth discovered a river flowing beneath the surface, but this isn't a river of water… instead, it's made from molten iron. The readings that were taken from space showed this formation to stretch from beneath North America to Russia, at depths of around 1800 miles and temperatures approaching those seen on the surface of the sun.

2. Strange Sounds
And now for the answer! The deepest man-made hole on earth in terms of depth below the surface is the Kola superdeep borehole in Russia which goes 40,000 feet deep into the crust.
