10. Champ Island
Champ Island is one of the most remote and mysterious islands in the Russian Arctic. It is part of the Franz Josef Archipelago. The 374 sq. km. isle has tundra landscapes and stone spheres randomly spread throughout the terrain. The spheres range in size from boulders to small pebbles that can be held in the palm of your hand. The most tame theory is that they were shaped by an ancient civilization for unknown purposes, and of course there are the usual alien theories involved.
Some believe the spheres may be the result of concretion, a process by which the precipitation of mineral cement between the particles in sedimentary rock or soil forms a hard mass. But, scientists have determined the spheres were actually formed underwater, so concretion in this case wouldn’t have worked. Did ancient people carve these stone balls underwater? Nobody knows, but that of course, is part of its mysterious charm!

9. Bouvet
Bouvet is the most remote uninhabited island in the world! To give you an idea of how remote it is: the nearest landmass is Antarctica. Its roughly 75 square miles is mostly covered by glaciers. There is very little aside from moss, seals, seabirds and penguins. However, the island has been at the center of some peculiar mysteries. An early discoverer of the island documented a second island nearby that was never seen again. In the 1960s, an abandoned lifeboat and various supplies were found on the island, though nothing was ever seen of its passengers.
In 1979, the United States’ Vela satellite picked up a bright flash of light between Bouvet and Prince Edward Islands. Known as the Vela Incident, it is now believed that the flash was caused by a secret South African-Israeli joint nuclear bomb detonation, though neither country has officially admitted it.
Today, Norway lays claim to the island and has even designated a special internet domain for the island. As of yet, the domain, “.bv” remains unused. They’d better watch out or the pirate bay might take it over!

8. Daksa Island
Called the “Island of Ghosts”, Daksa in the Adriatic Sea near Dubrovnik, Croatia, was once the home of the Franciscan Monastery of St. Sabina from 1281 CE to the 19th century. The small island also has a villa and an ancient lighthouse. However, it was little used after the monastery closed, and even less so after the events of 1944. At the height of World War II, Yugoslav partisans celebrated a victory by coming to Dubrovnik and rounding up 53 men suspected of being Nazi sympathizers, including the mayor of Dubrovnik and the local parish priest. Without a trial or evidence, they took them to Daksa and executed them.
In 2009, two mass graves were unearthed on the island. DNA samples were taken from the victims of the Daksa Massacre, and some were identified. The remains finally received a proper burial in 2010, 66 years after they were executed. But there are tales of the ghosts of the victims haunting the island, still crying out for justice. The little island is for sale, and has been for several years—without any takers. Not sure who wants to buy that dark piece of history.

7. Clipperton Island
Clipperton Island is a coral atoll south of Mexico and west of Guatemala in the Pacific. It was claimed by the French, followed by the Americans, and they both mined it for guano. Mexico took possession in 1897 and allowed a British company to mine the guano there. Around 1910, Mexico sent 13 soldiers to guard the island. Their wives and some servants joined them, and soon children were born. One of the island residents was a reclusive lighthouse keeper named Victoriano Álvarez. In 1914, supply ships stopped coming due to the Mexican Civil War, and malnutrition set in. The soldiers living on the island started to die off, until only the wives and their children remained. Victoriano Álvarez, the lighthouse keeper, also survived.
Álvarez seized control of the survivors and declared himself king of the island. He spent the next few years terrorizing the women and children of Clipperton Island, until they banded together to kill him. Gone was the mad king of Clipperton Island. In 1917, the last surviving islanders, three women and eight malnourished children, were rescued and evacuated by an American ship.

10. Rhinoceros
There are two species of Rhino in Africa, and three in southern Asia… but no matter where they are, they're a dominant force among the local wildlife. They can grow to as much as a tonne in weight (2204.62 lbs) and, despite being herbivorous, they can have a mean temper and never shy away from fighting for their survival.

9. Cheetahs
Cheetahs have had a prominent role in history, with images depicting them wearing collars from thousands of years ago. The Egyptians believed they carried their spirits away after death, and there is even extensive evidence of humans using them to hunt for gazelle, foxes, and hares.

8. Fox
The first step to domestication is the ability to tame an animal, and it's this that proves to be a step too far when it comes to foxes. There are 12 species of true fox, with another 25 that are sometimes called foxes… and whether that be the red fox, the Kitfox, or the Arctic fox, people have long wanted to be able to keep them as pets.

7. Raccoon
Despite being so cute and cuddly, raccoons make for terrible pets and are even further away from being domesticated. The first problem is their inability to be housetrained, so unless you have a particularly docile one, you won't be able to teach them even the most basic of tasks.

6. Zebra
Horses have been domesticated for centuries, and were vital to human development around the world… so why can’t the same be done with zebras? After all, they’re very closely related to equines, right?

5. Dingoes
Found across Australia, dingoes are a type of dog native to the continent. Despite humans being present there for a long time, dingoes have continued to be a pest for farmers, preying on their livestock, and haven’t ever been domesticated… unlike their close relations.

4. Tiger
Tigers are very large and strong cats, and it’s impossible to fully tame them, let alone domesticate them. The main reason for this is their aggression and their diet. As meat eaters, it’s not feasible to keep large groups together in captivity, because the food requirements alone would be prohibitive. What's more, they are very territorial and, in the wild, will mark territories as much as 40 miles across…

3. Bears
While there are only 8 different species of bear, they are found across North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. As such powerful animals, these omnivores would be invaluable if they could be domesticated, but there’s a lot to do with the nature of bears that makes this task impossible.

2. Dolphins
They’re known as some of the most intelligent animals, so you’d think it would be easier to domesticate a dolphin than other animals… but the reality is far from it. First, of course, is the issue that dolphins live in the ocean, so they aren’t able to be kept close to humans anywhere near as easily as horses or dogs. We have, though, kept dolphins in enclosures and taught them to perform tricks, but this is a far cry from true domestication.

1. Hippopotamus
The hippopotamus is arguably the most dangerous animal in Africa. Despite being mainly herbivorous, Hippos have developed effective protective measures to enable them to survive in the wild. They are highly aggressive and often charge at humans and boats after perceiving them as threats. Some individuals have been successfully kept in captivity, and even seen as pets, but there are often stories of owners who have begun to trust these animals too much and paid the price.

8. BLUE DEVIL AIRSHIP
During the War in Afghanistan, a massive reconnaissance airship called the Blue Devil was built for the United States Air Force. The airship’s primary purpose was to capture and process data from 12 onboard sensors, and then deliver the data to ground troops.

7. EXPEDITIONARY FIGHTING VEHICLE
Also known as the Advanced Amphibious Vehicle, the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle, or EFV, was an amphibious vehicle designed for the U.S. Marine Corps by General Dynamics during the 1990’s and 2000’s. The 38-ton “swimming tank” was essentially meant to be a landing craft that converted into a vehicle and was intended to replace the outdated AAV-7A1 which had entered service in 1972.

6. ALENIA C-27J SPARTAN
The future seemed promising for the C-27J Spartan twin turboprop in 2007, when it was chosen for the U.S. military’s $600 million Joint Cargo Aircraft Program. In September 2008, the United States received its first C-27J. In total, the Air Force ordered 38 of the aircraft at a unit cost of around $32 million per plane.

5. AGENT ORANGE
You’ve probably heard of Agent Orange, the highly toxic herbicide that was used by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War to destroy crops and forest cover in territory occupied by the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army. Between 1961 and 1971, over 20 million gallons of various dangerous chemicals were sprayed across 4.5 million acres in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, in a U.S. program codenamed Operation Ranch Hand.

4. 1968 THULE AIR BASE CRASH
On January 21, 1968, an American B52 Bomber carrying four nuclear bombs crashed into the sea near northwestern Greenland, one of the most frigid places on Earth. Human error was to blame for the crash - a crew member had stuffed seat cushions near a heating vent, causing a fire. When the smoke became unbearably thick, the crew had no choice but to eject, and the plane crashed 700 miles above the Arctic Circle, near America’s Thule Air Base.

3. BIKINI ATOLL CONTAMINATION
Between 1946 and 1958, the U.S. detonated 23 nuclear devices on Bikini Atoll, one of the Marshall Islands. Native residents of the island were relocated to nearby Rongerik Atoll and Kili Island. The scientists and military authorities running the experiments at the time promised the displaced residents that they’d be able to return home after the nuclear tests were finished.

2. CONTAMINATED WATER AT CAMP LEJEUNE
From 1953 to 1987, tap water at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune was heavily contaminated with toxic chemicals. Soldiers and families living there drank and bathed in the poisonous water, which contained concentrations of chemicals ranging from 240 to 3,400 times the permitted safety levels. Over 70 toxins were discovered in the water, including degreaser, benzene, vinyl chloride, and dry cleaning solvent.

1. FUTURE COMBAT SYSTEMS
Launched in 2003, Future Combat Systems, or FCS, was a modernization program for the U.S. Army. Well, it was supposed to be. The program’s vision included a battlefield network of unprecedented speed and flexibility, along with new brigades equipped with high-tech manned and unmanned vehicles.
