9. 13,000-Year-Old Human Remains
Some of the oldest-known human remains in the Americas were discovered in recent years, deep in the underwater cave systems of the Yucatan Peninsula in modern-day Mexico. In 2007, a team of divers found the ancient skeleton of a teenage female, whom they named Naia. Her remains were estimated to be over 12,000 years old.

8. Swedish Atlantis
In 2011, a team of divers discovered a collection of Stone Age artifacts off the Swedish coast, in the Baltic Sea. Included among the relics were a harpoon made from animal bone, flint tools, animal horns, wood, ropes, and the bones of ancient animals called aurochs.

7. An Ancient Forest
In 2015, divers Dawn Watson and Rob Spray of the volunteer group SeaSearch discovered the remains of a 10,000-year-old forest off the coast of Norfolk, England, at the bottom of the North Sea. Pretty cool place for a forest to hide! Watson found the forest just 300 meters (984.2 feet) from shore. At first, she thought she’d encountered the remains of a shipwreck.

6. An Underwater River
The dense, tropical jungle of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is littered with amazing cenotes, which are sinkholes caused by collapsed limestone that exposes the groundwater. One of the region’s sinkholes, the Cenote Angelita, comes with an extra surprise! It contains a distinct underwater river, located about 100 feet (30 meters) below the surface.

5. Shifting Tectonic Plates
British scuba diver, marine biologist, and underwater photographer Alexander Mustard is one of the few people who can say they’ve swum between two continents. How?? He entered a gap between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates near Iceland. The plates are separating at a rate of about one inch (2.54 cm) per year, and Mustard has captured breathtaking images during his dives into the crevice.

4. A Missing WWII-Era Submarine
In 2016, divers off the coast of Sardinia found the remains of the long-lost British World War II submarine HMS P311. The initial discovery was made by Massimo Domenico Bordone, a wreck hunter based in Genoa, Italy. He identified the ruins as the HMS P311 by the vessel’s two Chariot-style manned torpedoes.

3. Underwater “Crop Circles”
Japanese scuba diver and photographer Yoji Ookata has dedicated over half a century to exploring underwater mysteries. During a dive near Amami Oshima, off the southern tip of Japan in 2012, Ookata stumbled upon something he’d never seen before, despite his decades of diving experience.

2. Brinicles
Brine icicles, or brinicles, have several nicknames, including “sea stalactites” and “icicles of .” They might be pretty, but these things are very strange. These beautiful but deadly “tentacles” result from impurities like salt being forced out during the formation of Arctic and Antarctic sea ice. As the stream of salt drains from the ice, the surrounding water becomes more saline, lowering its freezing temperature and increasing its density.

1. 100 New Species
In 2018, scientists announced the discovery of the “rare light zone,” more formally called the Rariphotic Zone. It’s an ocean zone extending from 226 feet (130 meters) to 984 feet (300 meters) deep. The new section was discovered during a research trip to Bermuda led by marine scientists from Oxford University and organized by Nekton, a British non-profit organization for ocean exploration.

10. The Last Supper
The Last Supper, by Leonardo Da Vinci, is one of the world’s most famous artworks- and depicts arguably the most important moment between Christ and his followers. It’s long been thought that the painting contains hidden messages and codes, only clear to those who look deep enough into it. It's even been the subject of a number of fictitious stories, like the Da Vinci code, in which life-changing secrets have been revealed through this work.

9. The Nag Hammadi Library
First discovered in upper Egypt in 1945, the Nag Hammadi Library is a collection of 13 books, buried about 1,400 years ago, that included a large number of “Gnostic Gospels’. Including scriptures such as the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Philip, and the Gospel of Truth… these codices were believed to have been long destroyed, and date back to early Christian beliefs; ones that have all but been eliminated from the modern religion.

Recently, though, researchers have re-classified the extensive series of marks and carvings… and they are believed to have been made by witches in the 17th and 18th centuries.

3. Scheveningen Sands
Quite often, artworks that we think we understand are found to harbor secret meanings or images… and it's not uncommon for paintings to have been changed over the years to keep them in line with current tastes and values. This act of altering images is perhaps no clearer seen than in the case of Scheveningen Sands, which was painted by Hendrick van Anthonissen in 1641.

2. The Algol Star
The Algol star, also known as the demon star, is a star in the Perseus constellation and, as part of a three-star system, varies in brightness. This variation was thought to have been first recorded in 1667 by the Italian astronomer Geminiano Montanari… but the discovery of an ancient Egyptian manuscript shows that they had observed the star more than 3,000 years earlier.

Pigs are an important part of human culture, mainly in terms of food. However, inside them they have a potentially very dangerous byproduct: Phosphorus. They have it in their bodies, and they emit it into the general environment with their bowel movements.

The Spider-Silk Goat is just what it sounds like, a fusion of goat and spider DNA. Now, unlike movies that would make a creature built for horror films, on both the outside and inside this goat looks the same. It doesn't have tons of eyes or more than four legs, but it has been altered with spider DNA.

Not unlike the Spider-Silk Goats, Super Salmon, also known as AquAdvantage Salmon, were bred with a specific purpose. These salmon were not only bred to be huge, they were bred to get to that size in half the time that a natural salmon would do it. This of course speeds up the time that the fish would be ready to go to market to be sold all around the world.

10. Champ Island
Champ Island is one of the most remote and mysterious islands in the Russian Arctic. It is part of the Franz Josef Archipelago. The 374 sq. km. isle has tundra landscapes and stone spheres randomly spread throughout the terrain. The spheres range in size from boulders to small pebbles that can be held in the palm of your hand. The most tame theory is that they were shaped by an ancient civilization for unknown purposes, and of course there are the usual alien theories involved.
Some believe the spheres may be the result of concretion, a process by which the precipitation of mineral cement between the particles in sedimentary rock or soil forms a hard mass. But, scientists have determined the spheres were actually formed underwater, so concretion in this case wouldn’t have worked. Did ancient people carve these stone balls underwater? Nobody knows, but that of course, is part of its mysterious charm!

9. Bouvet
Bouvet is the most remote uninhabited island in the world! To give you an idea of how remote it is: the nearest landmass is Antarctica. Its roughly 75 square miles is mostly covered by glaciers. There is very little aside from moss, seals, seabirds and penguins. However, the island has been at the center of some peculiar mysteries. An early discoverer of the island documented a second island nearby that was never seen again. In the 1960s, an abandoned lifeboat and various supplies were found on the island, though nothing was ever seen of its passengers.
In 1979, the United States’ Vela satellite picked up a bright flash of light between Bouvet and Prince Edward Islands. Known as the Vela Incident, it is now believed that the flash was caused by a secret South African-Israeli joint nuclear bomb detonation, though neither country has officially admitted it.
Today, Norway lays claim to the island and has even designated a special internet domain for the island. As of yet, the domain, “.bv” remains unused. They’d better watch out or the pirate bay might take it over!

8. Daksa Island
Called the “Island of Ghosts”, Daksa in the Adriatic Sea near Dubrovnik, Croatia, was once the home of the Franciscan Monastery of St. Sabina from 1281 CE to the 19th century. The small island also has a villa and an ancient lighthouse. However, it was little used after the monastery closed, and even less so after the events of 1944. At the height of World War II, Yugoslav partisans celebrated a victory by coming to Dubrovnik and rounding up 53 men suspected of being Nazi sympathizers, including the mayor of Dubrovnik and the local parish priest. Without a trial or evidence, they took them to Daksa and executed them.
In 2009, two mass graves were unearthed on the island. DNA samples were taken from the victims of the Daksa Massacre, and some were identified. The remains finally received a proper burial in 2010, 66 years after they were executed. But there are tales of the ghosts of the victims haunting the island, still crying out for justice. The little island is for sale, and has been for several years—without any takers. Not sure who wants to buy that dark piece of history.

7. Clipperton Island
Clipperton Island is a coral atoll south of Mexico and west of Guatemala in the Pacific. It was claimed by the French, followed by the Americans, and they both mined it for guano. Mexico took possession in 1897 and allowed a British company to mine the guano there. Around 1910, Mexico sent 13 soldiers to guard the island. Their wives and some servants joined them, and soon children were born. One of the island residents was a reclusive lighthouse keeper named Victoriano Álvarez. In 1914, supply ships stopped coming due to the Mexican Civil War, and malnutrition set in. The soldiers living on the island started to die off, until only the wives and their children remained. Victoriano Álvarez, the lighthouse keeper, also survived.
Álvarez seized control of the survivors and declared himself king of the island. He spent the next few years terrorizing the women and children of Clipperton Island, until they banded together to kill him. Gone was the mad king of Clipperton Island. In 1917, the last surviving islanders, three women and eight malnourished children, were rescued and evacuated by an American ship.

8. Nan Madol
Off the coast of the island of Pohnpei in Micronesia stand the ruins of the ancient city of Nan Madol. The only ancient city ever built entirely on a coral reef, the city is made up of almost 100 artificial islands made of coral fill and stone, separated by narrow canals and protected by an outer seawall. Like Easter Island, this place is an engineering marvel!!

7. Teotihuacan
Before Europeans came to North America, an unknown culture arose in central Mexico and built a grand city that we have come to know as Teotihuacan. In its heyday, it was a city that covered 20 square kilometers (13 square miles) and was home to 200,000 people, all of them in carefully constructed and delineated neighborhoods where people were grouped according to the crafts that they constructed.

6. Puma Punku
The massive ancient city of Tiwanaku in Bolivia is dominated by a temple complex called Puma Punku that has puzzled archaeologists for decades. The city was already standing when the Inca moved into the region in 1470, although it was completely abandoned.

5. Ggantija, Malta
On the Mediterranean island of Gozo, one of the islands of Malta, stands a megalithic temple complex that predates the pyramids of Egypt. The two towers were built during the Neolithic Age, between 3600 and 2500 BC. They are the second-oldest manmade religious structures in the world. Number one is coming up so stay tuned!!

4. Stonehenge
The Salisbury Plain in England is home to possibly the most famous mysterious megalithic structure in the world, so of course, I had to mention it! Stonehenge was built from 3000 BC to 2000 BC, constructed in a series of stages. The site currently consists of a ring of standing stones, each stone at least 4 meters (13 feet) tall, 2.1 meters (7 feet) wide, and weighing around 25 tons.

3. Newgrange
Another Neolithic site, with important astrological alignment, can be found at Newgrange in Ireland’s Boyne Valley. Older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Giza, Newgrange was originally believed to be a tomb, but it’s actually a temple complex that was built by Stone Age farmers more than 5,200 years ago in 3200 BC.

2. Skara Brae
Located on the windy Orkney Islands of northern Scotland stands the Neolithic settlement known as Skara Brae. The most complete Neolithic village in Europe, Skara Brae was probably occupied between 3180 BC and 2500 BC.

1. Göbekli Tepe
Its name is Turkish for “potbelly hill,” and it’s the most recently found ancient structure on this list. Found on the plains of Anatolia, Göbekli Tepe is a man made hill, standing about 15 meters (49 feet) tall, and about 300 meters (980 feet) in diameter. Who cares?? Well It’s about 11,000 years old, making it the oldest temple structure in the world.

10. The Forbidden Mountain
By 1975, the world’s 20 tallest mountains had already been climbed. However, there remains one elusive summit- that of Gangkhar Puensum that lies on the border between Bhutan and China. With an elevation of 24,836 feet, it’s the highest unclimbed mountain in the world, and a place steeped in mystery.

9. Megalithic Stones in the Ural Mountains
The Ural mountains in Russia have been the site of a number of mysterious finds, but perhaps none so strange as a series of megalithic stones that were found in 2014 near Shoria mountain in southern Siberia. Some of these stones are thought to weigh as much as 4,000 tons, and they appear to have been cut with tools to give them flat surfaces and sharp corners… before being stacked 130 feet high.

8. The Ararat Anomaly
Mount Ararat, in the east of modern-day Turkey, is one of the most famous mountains in the world because of its religious significance. A photograph taken in 1949 by a US Air Force reconnaissance plane made this place even more mystical. The mountain is actually a dormant volcano, consisting of two cones known as Greater Ararat and Little Ararat.

7. Black Mountain
Black Mountain, in Queensland, Australia, stands out from the surrounding brush with its ominous looking dark rock, but this place has long been associated with unexplained phenomenon and is feared and avoided by those who live nearby. Whether it’s strange creatures, unexplained lights, or the countless people supposed to have visited but never returned… Black mountain has it all, but is there any truth behind it?

6. Dyatlov Pass
Dyatlov pass, in the northern region of Russia’s Ural mountains, is the site of one of mountaineering’s greatest mysteries. In January of 1959, nine college students were killed under mysterious circumstances, and to this day no-one knows what happened to them. There are several versions of this story, but here is one of them.

5. Gurudongmar Lake
Gurudongmar lake, in India, is one of the highest lakes in the world and is considered sacred by Buddhists, Sikhs, and Hindus. Legend says that the place was blessed by Guru Nanak, the spiritual leader of Sikhism, while he passed by in the 15th century.

The Kantega peak is a major summit in the Nepal Himalayas that reaches as high as 22,251 feet… and was first climbed in 1964. At first, it looks like every other peak in the range, but there's something that's caught the attention of UFO hunters around the world… the fact that a large portion of the mountain has been blacked out on Google Maps.

3. The Valley of Headless Men
Nahanni national park, in the Mackenzie mountain range of Canada, is as stunning a place as you would expect from the region… but there’s something mysterious about this particular area, which has become known as the valley of headless men. Rather than just being a scary name, it's earned this moniker because of the number of people who have disappeared nearby and later found without their heads.

2. The Khentii Mountains
The Khentii mountains are a range to the northeast of Mongolia, and are covered by the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected area… which is a 4,740 square mile wildlife preservation area that limits visitors, whether for tourism, hunting, or other reasons.

The Himalayas is a massive and largely unexplored mountain region, and legends from India and Tibet suggest there may still be something incredible to discover… the city of Gyanganj, also known as the city of the immortal beings. It’s said to be in a remote and inaccessible valley in the Himalayas, but one that has so far eluded researchers.

10. Rhinoceros
There are two species of Rhino in Africa, and three in southern Asia… but no matter where they are, they're a dominant force among the local wildlife. They can grow to as much as a tonne in weight (2204.62 lbs) and, despite being herbivorous, they can have a mean temper and never shy away from fighting for their survival.

9. Cheetahs
Cheetahs have had a prominent role in history, with images depicting them wearing collars from thousands of years ago. The Egyptians believed they carried their spirits away after death, and there is even extensive evidence of humans using them to hunt for gazelle, foxes, and hares.

8. Fox
The first step to domestication is the ability to tame an animal, and it's this that proves to be a step too far when it comes to foxes. There are 12 species of true fox, with another 25 that are sometimes called foxes… and whether that be the red fox, the Kitfox, or the Arctic fox, people have long wanted to be able to keep them as pets.

7. Raccoon
Despite being so cute and cuddly, raccoons make for terrible pets and are even further away from being domesticated. The first problem is their inability to be housetrained, so unless you have a particularly docile one, you won't be able to teach them even the most basic of tasks.

6. Zebra
Horses have been domesticated for centuries, and were vital to human development around the world… so why can’t the same be done with zebras? After all, they’re very closely related to equines, right?

5. Dingoes
Found across Australia, dingoes are a type of dog native to the continent. Despite humans being present there for a long time, dingoes have continued to be a pest for farmers, preying on their livestock, and haven’t ever been domesticated… unlike their close relations.

4. Tiger
Tigers are very large and strong cats, and it’s impossible to fully tame them, let alone domesticate them. The main reason for this is their aggression and their diet. As meat eaters, it’s not feasible to keep large groups together in captivity, because the food requirements alone would be prohibitive. What's more, they are very territorial and, in the wild, will mark territories as much as 40 miles across…

While there are only 8 different species of bear, they are found across North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. As such powerful animals, these omnivores would be invaluable if they could be domesticated, but there’s a lot to do with the nature of bears that makes this task impossible.

2. Dolphins
They’re known as some of the most intelligent animals, so you’d think it would be easier to domesticate a dolphin than other animals… but the reality is far from it. First, of course, is the issue that dolphins live in the ocean, so they aren’t able to be kept close to humans anywhere near as easily as horses or dogs. We have, though, kept dolphins in enclosures and taught them to perform tricks, but this is a far cry from true domestication.

The hippopotamus is arguably the most dangerous animal in Africa. Despite being mainly herbivorous, Hippos have developed effective protective measures to enable them to survive in the wild. They are highly aggressive and often charge at humans and boats after perceiving them as threats. Some individuals have been successfully kept in captivity, and even seen as pets, but there are often stories of owners who have begun to trust these animals too much and paid the price.

9. THERMITE AND DRY ICE
Thermite is a finely-ground chemical mixture of a metal and a metal oxide, usually aluminum and iron oxide. When thermite is ignited, the two chemicals undergo a chemical reaction called an exothermic oxidation-reduction reaction. This means that as electrons are transferred between the substances, energy is released. Thermite burns so hot, it can melt certain types of metal.

8. SODIUM ACETATE - “HOT ICE”
Hot ice is a simple yet amazing chemical that can be made safely right at home using vinegar and baking soda. The hour-long experiment produces a liquid solution containing sodium acetate. This fluid is supercooled, meaning it remains in a liquid state below its typical melting point.

7. MAGNESIUM AND DRY ICE
Magnesium produces a brilliant white light when ignited, which is why it’s used in handheld sparkler fireworks. Lighting magnesium inside a block of dry ice proves that air is not always necessary to create fire. During this experiment, the carbon dioxide in the dry ice is the magnesium’s only source of oxygen, creating a bright, energetic reaction.

6. THE DANCING GUMMY BEAR REACTION
The dancing gummy bear experiment is another way to learn about how fire can occur in non-traditional ways. Step one involves putting a small amount of potassium chlorate in a test tube and burning it until it melts. Then, gummy bears are dropped into the test tube using tongs.

5. SODIUM AND CHLORINE
Sodium chloride, or table salt, is formed by a reaction between sodium and chlorine. In their elemental forms, both chemicals are pretty dangerous. Chlorine is an extremely poisonous, pungent-smelling gas that is dangerous to inhale. It’s commonly used in small concentrations to kill bacteria in swimming pools. Pure sodium is highly reactive with water and air, and mishandling it can cause it to combust.

4. IODINE CLOCK REACTION
The iodine clock reaction is when colorless chemicals are mixed together and suddenly become a dark blue or black shade. This is the result of several chemical reactions occurring at the same time. One way this effect is achieved is by combining sodium sulfite, citric acid, and sodium iodate.

3. MICROWAVE PLASMA
Not sure if you already knew this or not but this is something you can do at home. If you cut a grape almost in half, but leave the two pieces connected by the skin, and heat it in the microwave, it somehow creates plasma, spitting out small, glowing jets. Until recently, however, scientists weren’t sure how or why this happened.

2. EXPLOSIVE POLYMERIZATION
What do you get when you mix together heat, sulfuric acid, and para-nitroaniline? A rapidly-expanding dark foam made out of water, sulfur dioxide, and some other, yet-to-be-determined substances. In 2014, YouTube user Adrian McLaughlin created one of the most impressive examples of explosive polymerization on the internet to date.

1. FERROFLUID
Ferrofluid is short for ferromagnetic fluid. In the presence of a magnetic field, it becomes strongly magnetized. It was first invented for NASA in 1963 by a man named Steve Papell, as a fuel that could be used in a weightless environment by being drawn toward a pump inlet using a magnetic field. After being invented, ferrofluid was advanced and improved upon largely by a man named R.E. Rosensweig and his colleagues.

8. BLUE DEVIL AIRSHIP
During the War in Afghanistan, a massive reconnaissance airship called the Blue Devil was built for the United States Air Force. The airship’s primary purpose was to capture and process data from 12 onboard sensors, and then deliver the data to ground troops.

7. EXPEDITIONARY FIGHTING VEHICLE
Also known as the Advanced Amphibious Vehicle, the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle, or EFV, was an amphibious vehicle designed for the U.S. Marine Corps by General Dynamics during the 1990’s and 2000’s. The 38-ton “swimming tank” was essentially meant to be a landing craft that converted into a vehicle and was intended to replace the outdated AAV-7A1 which had entered service in 1972.

6. ALENIA C-27J SPARTAN
The future seemed promising for the C-27J Spartan twin turboprop in 2007, when it was chosen for the U.S. military’s $600 million Joint Cargo Aircraft Program. In September 2008, the United States received its first C-27J. In total, the Air Force ordered 38 of the aircraft at a unit cost of around $32 million per plane.

5. AGENT ORANGE
You’ve probably heard of Agent Orange, the highly toxic herbicide that was used by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War to destroy crops and forest cover in territory occupied by the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army. Between 1961 and 1971, over 20 million gallons of various dangerous chemicals were sprayed across 4.5 million acres in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, in a U.S. program codenamed Operation Ranch Hand.

4. 1968 THULE AIR BASE CRASH
On January 21, 1968, an American B52 Bomber carrying four nuclear bombs crashed into the sea near northwestern Greenland, one of the most frigid places on Earth. Human error was to blame for the crash - a crew member had stuffed seat cushions near a heating vent, causing a fire. When the smoke became unbearably thick, the crew had no choice but to eject, and the plane crashed 700 miles above the Arctic Circle, near America’s Thule Air Base.

3. BIKINI ATOLL CONTAMINATION
Between 1946 and 1958, the U.S. detonated 23 nuclear devices on Bikini Atoll, one of the Marshall Islands. Native residents of the island were relocated to nearby Rongerik Atoll and Kili Island. The scientists and military authorities running the experiments at the time promised the displaced residents that they’d be able to return home after the nuclear tests were finished.

2. CONTAMINATED WATER AT CAMP LEJEUNE
From 1953 to 1987, tap water at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune was heavily contaminated with toxic chemicals. Soldiers and families living there drank and bathed in the poisonous water, which contained concentrations of chemicals ranging from 240 to 3,400 times the permitted safety levels. Over 70 toxins were discovered in the water, including degreaser, benzene, vinyl chloride, and dry cleaning solvent.
