11. Tanzanite
The name “tanzanite” was first used by Tiffany & Company for blue, gem-quality specimens of the mineral zoisite. They renamed the precious stone mainly because they felt it would be easier to market under the catchy name “tanzanite.”
The world’s only known tanzanite deposit of commercial value is located in northern Tanzania, hence the label “tanzanite,” which reflects the gem’s limited geographic origin.

Spinel has been around since ancient times, but received little consumer recognition and was underappreciated until recently. Its rich red color and history finally gained some well-deserved attention when the demand for ruby alternatives increased in recent years.

The term “black opal” refers to opals with a black, dark gray, dark blue, or dark green body color. Despite its dark body tone, a black opal would be worthless if it lacked the vibrant spectrum of colors that are visible when it shines in the light. Black opals contain trace elements of iron oxide and carbon, which causes their unusual darkness.

Since its discovery in Madagascar in 1902 by French mineralogist Alfred Lacroix, grandidierite has seldom appeared in jewelry and gem collections. This lovely and extremely rare stone ranges in color from bluish-green to greenish-blue. It’s suitable for jewelry due to its 7.5 hardness, but is difficult to cut because it has good cleavage in two directions, according to the International Gem Society.

The red beryl is both an ultra-rare gemstone and a rare type of beryl, receiving its red hue from traces of manganese. Crystals worthy of cutting gems have only ever been found the Wah Wah Mountains of B County, Utah. To give you an idea of how rare it is, for every 150,000 gem-quality diamonds that are found, one red beryl crystal is discovered, according to an estimate by the Utah Geological Survey.

4. Alexandrites
Alexandrite is a rare, color-changing version of the mineral chrysoberyl. It’s referred to by some gem aficionados as “emerald by day, ruby by night.” The gem was originally discovered in 1830 in Russia’s Ural Mountains, and has since been found in Sri Lanka, East Africa, and Brazil. Gem-quality material is exceptionally rare and valuable, however.
